a very yummy sunday-night hot meal of rice and lentils. served with yogurt and lemon pickle or spiced buttermilk

Ingredients

    basmati rice - 1 cup
    yellow moong dal - 0.5 cup
    ginger root - grated / bruised - as needed
    green chillies - 2-3 split
    red chilli powder - 0.5 tsp
    cumin powder - 0.5 tsp
    garam masala - 0.5 tsp
    lemon juice - 1 tbsp

    for tempering -
    1 tbsp oil
    1 tsp cumin seed
    hing
    1 tsp turmeric

Directions

temper the ingredients in hot oil in a pressure cooker
add ginger,chillies. stir fry
add red chilli powder , cumin powder, garam masala, stir 1 min
add washed and drained rice +lentil.
stir fry 2-3 min
add 4 cups water, salt , cover and cook 10 -1 5 min
open, adjust salt, add lemon , the rice should not be dry,
it should be very soft, and have a thick -porridge like consistency. serve with pickle and yogurt.
