Introduction

I love the almond butter Perfect Food Bars but the price ($2.85 a bar, $20 on a case of 8 when it's on sale? yikes!) keeps me from enjoying them on a regular basis. I got this idea from looking at the ingredients and thinking, "hey, a lot of this 'whole food powder' is in my Alive! vanilla protein powder." Most of the ingredients are from the bulk section of my local natural food store which saves me even more on the cost of making these knockoffs. Ingredients

    - 1 1/2 c. fresh-ground roasted or raw almond butter
    - 3/4 c. instant non-fat milk powder
    - 1/2 c. honey
    - 1/3 c. chopped raw almonds
    - 1/4 c. semi-sweet mini chocolate chips
    - 6 Tbs. sesame seeds or raw hulled hemp seeds
    - 2 Tbs. coconut sugar or other fine, natural sugar
    - 2 Tbs. flax, grapeseed, or hemp oil (or combination of raw, cold-pressed oils)
    - 1 scoop/39g of ALIVE whole food vanilla protein shake powder (or any vanilla soy/whey protein powder)

Directions

Combine almond butter, honey and oil in medium-sized bowl until thoroughly mixed.

Reserve 2 Tbs. non-fat milk powder and 2 Tbs. sesame/hemp seeds, combine in a separate bowl with 2 Tbs. coconut sugar; set aside.

Slowly mix the remaining non-fat milk powder, protein powder and sesame/hemp seeds into the almond butter dough. Fold in mini chocolate chips and chopped almonds.

Roll the almond butter dough into balls and flatten or stretch into bars - you can add more non-fat milk powder if the dough is too sticky. Dip or roll each one in the milk powder/sugar/seed mix until whole surface is coated and set on waxed paper. Store in the fridge or freezer (I put them on freezer paper in the fridge.. when they are cold, tear the paper and wrap them in smaller pieces to take with you!)

Serving Size: Makes 15 cookie-sized rounds or 12 long bars

    Incredible!
Just made these. SUPER EASY! Taste very much like the real thing. I used coconut milk powder, and WAY less honey. And i just mixed all the ingredients together ( I'm too lazy to roll bars in the dry mixture). Still turned out AWESOME. Thanks SOO much for this $ saving recipe!!! - 10/17/15
