Introduction

This is my simplified and less "calorific" version of my Liverpool Nana's fabulous trifle. She included sherry and fruit salad in the cake part and used real whipped cream instead of Cool Whip, but I've opted to go without them. You could certainly go traditional, though - just make sure to add in the extra calories.

It looks absolutely decadent, but it's really not a huge number of calories per serving - even with the quite large serving sizes suggested. It's also surprisingly good for you.

I entered it as a Christmas treat, because it's a tradition in our family to have it every Christmas. However, it doesn't have to be saved for Christmas. It's also great for parties or any time you want a beautiful and tasty dessert.

It keeps well in the fridge for a few days. So, you don't have to eat it all at once.

Number of Servings: 6

Ingredients

    3 Tbsp Bird's Custard Powder
    3 Tbsp sugar
    2.5 cups of 2% milk
1.5 packets of Jello Gelatin (Raspberry, Strawberry, or Cherry)
4 small white cake muffins (43 g each) or jelly rolls or angel food (even stale bread will work)
1/2 container Cool Whip whipped topping
    1 Cadbury's Flake Bar (OPTIONAL)

Tips

Bowl should be glass or crystal if possible for best presentation - 3.5" tall and 8.5" diameter minimum.

This is very easy to make and doesn't take much "hands on" time at all. The vast majority of the prep time is spent with it just sitting in the fridge. Best to start this in the morning if you want it for supper. You can even start the first layer the night before.

Directions

1. Arrange cake to cover the bottom inch or so of the bowl (you may want to cut them for even distribution)
2. Make Jello and pour over the cake to cover all of it.
3. Cool in fridge a couple of hours to set. It's very important that this is set properly to make a distinct layer.
4. Cook the custard as per instructions until it's thick and creamy (consistency of pudding).
5. Pour custard over the Jello/cake to make a second layer.
6. Cool in fridge again for a couple of hours to set. It's very important that the custard is set properly to make a distinct layer.
7. Spread the whipped topping to cover the whole top of the bowl. You should now have three distinct layers.
8. OPTIONAL: Just before serving, crumble a Cadbury's Flake bar over the top.

Serving Size: makes 6 very large servings
