Introduction

Adds a little Asian flair to barbeque sauce. Serve this with seitan or tempeh or tofu and sauteed red peppers.It's also awesome as a grilling sauce. Ingredients

    2 tablespoons canola oil (any veg oil will do)
    1 medium yellow onion, chopped
    2 cloves garlic, chopped
    2 tablespoons ginger, chopped
    3 tablespoons red wine
    15 oz can stewed tomatoes
    6 oz tomato paste
    zest of 1/2 an orange
    juice of an orange
    1 tablespoon soy sauce
    1/2 teaspoon anise seed, crushed
    1/4 teaspoon allspice
    fresh black pepper
    1/4 cup water
    1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
    3 tablespoons pure maple syrup


Directions

Makes 5 cups

Over medium-high heat saute onions in oil 5 minutes, until translucent. Add garlic, ginger, anise, black pepper, saute 5 more minutes. Add mirin to deglaze the pan. Add stewed tomatoes, orange juice, soy sauce, water and allspice and bring to a low boil, uncovered. You may need to lower the heat a bit. Let boil about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and let cool about 15 minutes.

Add maple syrup and liquid smoke and puree. Serve over tofu, tempeh, seitan or whatever you want.
