Ingredients
-
4½ cups All purpose flour
2 packages Active dry yeast
1¼ cups Milk
½ cup Sugar
¼ cup Shortening
2 tsp. Salt
2 Eggs
2 tbs. Melted butter
1 bottle Green sugar crystals
1 bottle Assorted candy crystals
Directions
In large mixer bowl combine 2 cups of the flour and the yeast. In saucepan, heat milk, sugar, shortening, and salt just till warm (115-120o) stirring constantly to melt shortening. Add to the dry mixture in mixer bowl; add eggs. Beat at low speed with electric mixer for ½ minute, scraping sides of bowl constantly. Beat 3 minutes at high speed. By hand, stir in enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough.
Turn out onto lightly floured surface and knead till smooth and elastic (8 to 10 minutes). Shape into a ball. Place in lightly greased bowl, turning once. Cover and let rise in warm place until double (1½ to 2 hours). Punch down. Cover; let rest 10 minutes
Divide dough in thirds. For each tree, roll one-third into a 12x6-inch rectangle. Brush with melted butter; sprinkle with green sugar. Fold the rectangle in half length-wise and cut into twelve 1-inch strips. Twist each one; arrange on greased baking sheet with cut ends to center, in tree shape. Use 10 strips for branches and 1 strip for trunk. Cut remaining strip in half; use as top branches for tree. Once the dough is arranged into the tree shape, sprinkle on the remaining green sugar and assorted candy crystals. Repeat with remaining dough.
Cover and let rise in warm place till double (30 to 45 minutes). Bake at 375 o for 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from sheets and cool. Makes three
