I WASH IT, CLEAN IT, SOAK IN COLD WATER FOR A MINUTE OR TWO, THEN CUT, SLICE, AND/OR DICE MY ONIONS - ALWAYS WITH MY MOUTH CLOSED - I DON'T TEAR UP OR CRY AT ALL.
Great tip. Will have the onion cold next time I need to cut it.
I always keep the onion whole and rinse the peeled onion in cold water for a few seconds before dicing. I like having half the onion to hang onto while cutting so I can keep my fingers further away from knife.
That's sort of the way I learned at BICC; tucking my fingers is always a challenge and I shave my finger nails....
Sure wasn't how I was taught at the California Culinary Academy.
Thanks a lot Chef Meg! Great video! I didn't know to put the onion in the fridge! WooHoo!!
Thank you! This video is so much help.
Like the tip for dicing
Love the dicing method. Never knew how!
Very helpful. i learned how to slice and diced. This video taught me that my way is the wrong way and i don't have to do it that way anymore. Thanks.
What is this annoying ad that is interrupting the video? And as someone who chops lots of onions and cries through all of it, I really learned a lot of helpful tips from this video
Great video. However it was hard to hear as the Bell ads on the right side of the screen kept on playing music throughout most of the video.
just as Micheal said I'm amazed that any body can earn $8227 in 4 weeks on the internet. read the article... www.BAR29.com
I do keep mu onion in the fridge, and it does help..
Nothing is new under the sun! I am passing this along on FB--but this is a perfect time before company arrives--to shed natural tears and put on you best "game" face. WE will be cooking a storm up for Father's Day!
Good to know .
didn't know that about reducing the gas by refrigerating; thanks!
Knew this could be done but never knew the technique for dicing. Thanks
MEG MAKES THIS LOOK SO EASY...I'm glad she made this video. I could now make more uniform dicing.
Thank You! Now I need reference to good, not really expensive knives, I'd like to bring up my kitchen utensils, is there recommendations on this site?
never to old to learn something new, enjoyed video
Putting onions in the fridge won't work - I keep my CSA onions in the fridge because I don't have a good place to store them all winter. They still make me tear up if I'm wearing glasses. Wearing contacts helps a lot!
She said twenty to thirty mins.
Did I miss how long in the frig to help prevent tears?
I never thought of putting the onion in the fridge before cutting. I'll give it a try.
Thank you for the tip.
Will have to remember to put onions in the fridge before cutting. Hate those tears.
Will definitely put my onions in the refrig from now on before cutting them!
These are my FAVORITE videos to watch!! Thanks for the tips!
I like this tip
Thank you. Very helpful.
This video helped me! I can't believe I was holding it wrong, but maybe that's why I got so many cuts on my fingers!
Thank you - I love onions but cutting them have always been a trail
I cannot deal with onions so I use a slicer dicer. we eat onions with everything.D H eats them Raw-Not me though. Thanks for this interesting video. HUGS Pat in Maine.
Good tips for slicing and dicing. I really liked the fewer steps for dicing. The camera bouncing between 3 or 4 different shots was very disconcerting, my eyes would just get to focus on the action and then the shot would change. Sometimes less is more.
Well illustrated technique. Thanks.
I've been doing it wrong all these years. This looks so easy. Thanks.
Thanks for the info! Wish I had known it last when when I had to dice 6 cups worth! It will go better with this info, I'm sure!
Excellent! Thanks for the lesson!
I love these tips.....I love onions!!
Great video. Tips for protecting the fingers most appreciated. Great job, Chef Meg!
I love onions. After all these years, I still hate chopping them....Come to think of it, I hate chopping up anything...Worse chore next to doing dishes. Thanks for the video, Chef Meg!
I love onions, as a young mom and cook(many years ago) I learned this trick, do not have a conversation while you are chopping or dicing onions, if you are speaking you will breathe in more of the onion juices, sometimes I try to hold my breath, that works, but you can"t do that for a long time.
That was awesome, my husband loves onions so i pretty much try and put it in almost everything i cook. Too kool. I love learning new tricks.
Talk about TIMELY! I have onions to cut tonight and I'm so sick of what happens to my head every time (excessive sobbing, whole head turns red, eyes ache all night... hideous!). I've been asking everybody what to do but all anybody ever says is "Just use frozen". Refrigerate! Who knew...
I keep my onions in the fridge at all times so if I'm in a hurry I won't forget to put them the fridge or take them out......
Great tips! Thanks! Funny thing though...While watching this my eyes felt like they wanted to cry over these onions XD haha.
Wow! I needed that advice...I always end up in tears!
Super info, Thanks Chef Meg!
Wow! I learned a lot. Thanks Chef Meg!!
Thanks! Very helpful!
Thanks! Good tips!
Thanks for the advice. It is very useful.
Thanks Chef Meg...valuable info for a newbie "chef" like me!
Most of the oils that do the most irritating to the eyes are mainly in the root,so leave it on. Then peel and then do most of the slicing first. Try it. It work.
a real winner for those of us who are just starting to get into cooking. Thanks Meg!
I agree - useful information
Wow that was good.
This technique also goes for cucumber, succhini etc as long as you plan to use the center of the vegetable as well. Just turn them 90 degrees over and slice again, along the vegetable, and then slice as with the onion. Kids find it suddenly easy to help in the kitchen, and itīs safer for the fingers
Great. Please keep these demo's going. Thank You.
It is a simple thing, but you made it even easier. Thank you.
After I have cut the onion in half, I wash it - takes away the tears!
French Onion soup is a favorite here. I'm very sensitive to onions. Solved: RSVP Onion goggles from amazon.com (or other vendors). NO MORE TEARS. RED EYES.
I turn on a small fan or the stove top fan and slice the onion relatively near it. The fan will divert the onion gasses away from your eyes.
THANKS, I NEEDED THIS:)
Best I have ever seen. Will be very helpful.
