I always keep the onion whole and rinse the peeled onion in cold water for a few seconds before dicing. I like having half the onion to hang onto while cutting so I can keep my fingers further away from knife.
That's sort of the way I learned at BICC; tucking my fingers is always a challenge and I shave my finger nails....
Sure wasn't how I was taught at the California Culinary Academy.

Great video. However it was hard to hear as the Bell ads on the right side of the screen kept on playing music throughout most of the video.

Putting onions in the fridge won't work - I keep my CSA onions in the fridge because I don't have a good place to store them all winter. They still make me tear up if I'm wearing glasses. Wearing contacts helps a lot!

I cannot deal with onions so I use a slicer dicer. we eat onions with everything.D H eats them Raw-Not me though. Thanks for this interesting video. HUGS Pat in Maine.
Good tips for slicing and dicing. I really liked the fewer steps for dicing. The camera bouncing between 3 or 4 different shots was very disconcerting, my eyes would just get to focus on the action and then the shot would change. Sometimes less is more.

I love onions, as a young mom and cook(many years ago) I learned this trick, do not have a conversation while you are chopping or dicing onions, if you are speaking you will breathe in more of the onion juices, sometimes I try to hold my breath, that works, but you can"t do that for a long time.
That was awesome, my husband loves onions so i pretty much try and put it in almost everything i cook. Too kool. I love learning new tricks.
Talk about TIMELY! I have onions to cut tonight and I'm so sick of what happens to my head every time (excessive sobbing, whole head turns red, eyes ache all night... hideous!). I've been asking everybody what to do but all anybody ever says is "Just use frozen". Refrigerate! Who knew...

Most of the oils that do the most irritating to the eyes are mainly in the root,so leave it on. Then peel and then do most of the slicing first. Try it. It work.

This technique also goes for cucumber, succhini etc as long as you plan to use the center of the vegetable as well. Just turn them 90 degrees over and slice again, along the vegetable, and then slice as with the onion. Kids find it suddenly easy to help in the kitchen, and itīs safer for the fingers

After I have cut the onion in half, I wash it - takes away the tears!
French Onion soup is a favorite here. I'm very sensitive to onions. Solved: RSVP Onion goggles from amazon.com (or other vendors). NO MORE TEARS. RED EYES.
I turn on a small fan or the stove top fan and slice the onion relatively near it. The fan will divert the onion gasses away from your eyes.
