I made this the other day and just finished the last serving for breakfast this morning. It was tasty, but I added some splenda and soy milk. I think I'll triple the batch the next time I make it, it got crispy around the edges of the crockpot and the crock was hard to clean. Thanks! - 9/24/09

This sounds like a great overnight "oatmeal" recipe. When I make it, I will boost the protein by stirring in some vanilla flavored soy powder before serving it. I will also wait until serving time to add the cinnamon, and maybe a dash of nutmeg! - 3/11/08

Recipe was delicious. However it cooked in 3 hours not 6-8hours. It makes a lot so you have more for another day! - 11/11/11

I was out of quinoa and barley, so I substituted millet and buckwheat (which is actually a fruit). I agree with others that this was bland, but next time I will add raisins and perhaps a drop or two of organic maple syrup. - 7/10/10

    what is quinoa? - 3/11/08

Sounds like a sort of porridge with a difference - something I could maybe cope with, so long as it's cooked the day before, and folk reckon it can be eaten next day. - 3/18/13

    Good
I'm giving it a 3 star because even though it is quite bland, it is so darn healthy. I think the recipe is a nice clean palette to dress up with our individual tastes. Next time I am going to try adding some coconut and also use almond milk instead of water. Maybe add a little dried fruit, too. - 10/24/12

    Bad
I made as described and found it utterly inedible. The flavor was flat and no amount of sweetener was going to cheer it up. I even added a pinch of salt to try to enhance it. And yes, it's a FIVE grain dish. - 6/13/11

I tried this this morning and it was ok, I added nutmeg to give it more flavour, next time might add a little bit of soya milk or sweetener as it was a little bland. - 5/9/11

Has anyone tried making this using canned pumpkin puree? Or any thoughts on how much puree to substitute in with the water? My husband is a picky eater, I was thinking if I could make this and give it a pumpkin pie taste he might go for it. - 4/7/10

I used my coffe grinder for the heavier grains so it wasn't as chunky(young children and textures) I do like it but find it a little bland. I love the idea of it and wondered about adding flax, cream of wheat, and cornmeal to give it more body or something...who says it can't be an 8 grain? - 3/14/08

Quinoa is the sixth grain in this recipe. It is a speices of goosefoot grown as a crop primarily for it's edible seeds. Sounds good I think I will try it!! - 3/12/08

I lived on a farm as a child. I would visit a friend who lived in the far back woods. They had to cook with wood. Early on a cold morning we would get up to a breakfast of cooked wheat the mother had cooked overnight in a canning pressure cooker. This recipe brings back memories of those times. - 3/11/08

I only count 5 too, but does it really matter? I'll add some sweet taste to it by using a little brown sugar. It's also good that you can wake up to it being ready for you and your family! - 3/11/08

PRETTY GOOD-MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS DOING SOMETHING GOOD FOR MY BODY. I DOUBLED THE CINNAMON AND ADDED 1/2 TSP SLENDA - 3/6/08

  • no profile photo

Pretty good. I had to add some Splenda to it and my crock pot made it a little too mushy for my taste. Next time I'll probably make it during the day so that I can cook for a shorter time and then rewarm in the microwave. Also, I think I'll try steel cut oats next time instead of rolled oats. - 12/5/07

I love the idea of waking up to a hot breakfast. I added a touch of smart balance and splenda and it is quite tasty. However my rice did not cook. Next time I may pre-cook the rice half way to give it a head start before I add it to the remaining ingredients in the crockpot. - 7/2/07

its ok, a little bland, and some grains stay slightly chewy and don't seem to absorb as much water. - 3/25/07

I think that for a complete breakfast you will need more protein of some sort, this is carbohydrate heavy. A carbohydrate meal will make you drowsy in about two hours and protein is a critical element for the breakfast meal. - 5/25/11

Used millet for the bulgur (can't eat wheat), but would do buckwheat groats next time. Also added more water and cooked 9 hours due to hulled barley and steel cut oats. Good texture. Bland--needs more zip. Flax and raisins helped a bit, and a bit of nutmeg. A keeper--so cnvenient! - 3/12/08

We love the Bob's Red Mill "8 grains wheatless" breakfast cereal and I've thought some about just dumping the whole bag into the crockpot and then freezing the individual portions to eat later? But this sounds good with the apples and I'd probably put in some nuts too! Thanks for sharing! - 9/13/10
