This extremely forgiving recipe can be made with as little as 1 cup of added sugar and can be made with either white whole wheat or regular white flour. Applesauce can be used in place of oil, but will change consistency and may reduce the "shelf-life" of the batter.
If you have a super powerful blender, it's fun to make this by grinding your own wheat & oat grains. My son & I enoy watching them turn into flour. We use 1/4 cup each of steel-cut oats & whole wheat kernels, then we use white flour to make 1 cup of combined flour.
Alternatively, use 3 oz each of wheat flour & oat flour & 2 oz of white flour.
