My sister or I make our version of this every Thanksgiving and Christmas. The dressing is spread on the top and sugar sprinkled over it to keep the lettuce fresh and crisp. it does not sink into the salad at all. I made this 4 days in advance and it was as fresh tasting as if I had just made it.
