Definitely too many calories for everyday fare, but a good vegetarian alternative to meat dishes on holidays - my mother-in-law used to make this for me every Thanksgiving since I married into the family almost 30 years ago, and now that she's allowing me to help cook the meal, it's become my job. A full serving is alomost 300 calories, but the omnivores in my family like it so much that they have it as a side dish (smaller portions, so fewer calories) - you'll definitely want to make enough for both vegetarians and omnivores - I'm the only vegetarian in the family, and I restrict myself to one serving, but this recipe always somehow disappears!
Old-fashioned, whole milk, real butter mashed potatoes. They can still be considered healthy if you eat a small portion alongside your other low-calorie foods. These can be considered a "healthy carb" comfort food, instead of reaching for the ice cream, chocolate or other sugar-laden food. The ingredients listed will make enough for about 18 1/2 cup servings (I only make these for family gatherings or holiday dinners).
Can easily be made with low fat sausage too. I have to make a double batch of this since my husband and 4 boys love it! Cooks a long time but little hands on time. From Martha Rose Shulman's cookbook.

Cheaper, healthier, and less preservatives than store bought, and honestly I think they taste better!

I have been making this recipe for years and everyone loves it. Even my picky kids. I like it because its an easy way to hide veggies in my food without my kids complaining.
This is a very different smelling and tasting way to cook chicken stew in a crock pot. I use frozen chicken thighs and then they cook perfectly for 8-10 hours
A Persian dish best served with dilled rice. You can grill in summer or use a grill pan when cold, but it rocks over hamburger!
great way to use up left over veggies or just use them fresh - either way its a tasty meal full of vitamins!
